Until recent years, laser hair removal often claimed to permanently remove all hair. But consumers were complaining over this fact and studies proved that laser hair removal could not guarantee permanent removal of all hair. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) stepped in to establish clarity and granted manufacturers permission to claim “permanent reduction”, but not permanent removal.

So now that clarity has been established, can laser hair removal really reduce hair? The answer to this question will depend on who you ask, but the short answer is yes. Laser hair removal can indeed reduce hair, and there have been enough studies to support this fact. While there are definitely those who saw a strong reduction in hair after just a few treatments, not everyone who had laser hair removal would agree, as there are those who had less successful treatments.

While laser hair removal can surely lead to permanent reduction in hair, there are definitely those who did not see the promised reduction. However, there are a few common reasons as to why laser hair removal may not have been successful. The first explanation to look at is whether the client was a good candidate for laser hair removal to begin with, as the best candidate has traditionally been someone with fair skin and dark hair. This is because the laser is attracted to color, and this combination makes it easy for the laser to target the hairs.

Some people will say that they were good candidates for laser hair removal and still did not see results. There are a few explanations for this as well. Some laser hair removal clinics are not using the latest or most efficient laser machines. An inefficient laser machine can result in less successful treatments. Consumer education is important in this matter, as all prospective laser hair removal clients are encouraged to do their own research and see what the best and newest machines are before they decide to undergo treatments.

Another reason could be that the person who performed the laser treatments was not experienced enough. The laser hair removal practitioner must have the proper training and experience and know which laser machine they should use. In a few rare cases, people have been good candidates for laser hair removal and gone to a first-rate laser hair removal clinic and still not seen a reduction. Or, the hair that was reduced came back. The reason for this could be hormonal changes. Someone who is worried that they might have a hormonal condition can see a doctor before they decide to undergo laser hair removal.

Anyone concerned about the longevity of laser hair removal can do a test patch or just a few sessions in a smaller area before deciding to proceed or buy a full package. Laser hair removal in the hands of an experienced practitioner and on someone who is a good candidate for laser hair removal, will likely lead to permanent reduction of hair.
