Laser Hair Removal – When Will I See Results?

December 19, 2010 in Hair Removal 101,Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal generally promises permanent reduction of hair, so it is no wonder that most people who undergo the procedure eagerly await the first signs of positive results. And while positive results can often be seen soon after, it is important to keep in mind that it might take several sessions in order to see a clear difference.

And while it is possible to see results even after just one session, it will probably be just a small reduction, not full disappearance of all hair. This is because hair grows in three different phases and laser hair removal can only target the hair that is in the growing phase. While the exact number of sessions needed in order to see results is unique, it is quite common to see an obvious difference after three sessions. In fact, the majority of people will need between three and six sessions in order to see satisfactory results.

The amount of time it takes to see results also depends on exactly what one is referring too, the permanent or temporary removal of hair. While it may take a while to reach permanent reduction of hair, the temporary absence will be seen sooner, about 10-14 days after the treatment. This is when hairs will shed and the skin will be smooth and hair free, much like after a waxing session. However, in laser hair removal, the goal is to have damaged the hair follicles to the point where they cannot grow back, and multiple sessions will be needed to reach that goal.

About one month after the first laser hair removal session some of the hair might be gone, but some hair might also be growing back. The hair that is growing back is the new set of hairs that was unaffected by the previous session and that needs to be treated. Sometimes, even hair follicles that were treated will grow back, because they were not damaged enough during the laser session, and this can be the result of the wrong laser machine, too low settings, or an inexperienced practitioner. Some clinics have low standards and use subpar laser machines, which could make the treatment inefficient. However, sometimes hair will grow back even though all parameters were appropriate. Laser hair removal can be more efficient in some people than others.

While it is understandable to want to see results from laser hair removal as soon as possible, the first step is to make sure one has picked the best laser hair removal clinic that is available. Many laser hair removal clinics have discounted packages that they offer. But it might be a good idea to try a couple of sessions first before buying a full package, just to see if there are any positive results. Someone who has undergone a series of laser hair removal treatments but not seen any results may want to get a consultation at another clinic.
