A straight razor shave may seem like a dangerous task for men who want to use it at home. However, the procedure actually isn’t as dangerous as it seems.

In fact, numerous websites and reports show that a straight-edge razor is a very simple tool to use.

A barber from The Art of Shaving shop in New York, Israel Leon, explained just how easy the shaving process is. In a demonstration for the Wall Street Journal, he explained that men can get the best shaving results in the shower. The hot moisture of the shower opens the pores of the skin dramatically. This allows the razor to glide across the skin much more smoothly.

In a barbershop, Leon replicates this moisture effect by applying a warm towel onto the face for a few minutes to open up the pores of the skin. He then applies pre-shave oil thoroughly onto the face. This puts a protective barrier in-between the blade and the skin, so that he can shave in any direction without irritation.

After this point, Leon then uses a barber brush to rub the shaving cream onto the skin in circular motions. This moves the facial hair around, lifting the hair further out so that it becomes easier to shave. He then begins to shave downward first.

Moving the razor in a downward motion will lower the hair at a angle. Then the barber shaves in an upward motion. This makes it easier for the razor to remove the hair more closely from the skin. He finishes the job by applying a cold, wet towel to close the pores of the skin. This prevents the hair from growing back quickly. Finally, he applies after-shave balm onto the shaved area to prevent any irritation.

The process is nearly the same if a person uses a convention hoe-shaped razor. The blade may have plenty of guards to keep it from cutting the hair closely, but a hot towel or a shower dramatically opens the pores up for a clean shave. The pre-shave oil also helps to protect the skin.

An electric shaver, on the other hand, is not nearly as effective. Men actually need to spend more time on exfoliating the skin, because an electric razor merely cuts the hair off of the surface of the epidermis. It does not provide the same close glide as a razor. According to Israel Leon, this is why people often say that a razor can cut years off of a person’s skin.

If men are interested in straight-edge razors, plenty of American companies still make more conventional models. Some of these brands include Parker safety razors and Dovo stainless steel blades. There are always ways to restore vintage models, which are often considered the most effective straight edges made in the heyday of the straight edge.

This article only covers the basics, but it demonstrates how easy it is to replicate the clean, close shave of a barbershop. A straight-edge might seem costly, but it is also one of the most effective tools for a man who is looking for an advanced hair removal solution.

Gillette has always worked hard to perfect their high-quality razor lineup. Their newest upgrade, the Fusion ProGlide, is more than just a deluxe version of the Fusion.

The ProGlide adds in new changes to make the excellent shaver glide even more smoothly than before.

For anyone who doesn’t know the Fusion shavers well, Gillette’s brand uses five blades to thoroughly trim facial hairs down to size. They also include a sideburn trimmer on the back, so that people can remove thicker hairs without a problem. The company labeled this new feature as “fusion technology.” This technological name was more or less made just to counter against Schick’s Quattro razors, which used four blades.

As silly as the name sounds, it helped Gillette’s Fusion gain acceptance as one of the top razors in the market. Despite a few complaints that the Fusion was not much different than Gillette’s previous Mach 3 razor, it still received very favorable reviews.

The ProGlide continues the Fusion line of five-blade razors by making numerous modifications to the head. The leading blades are now thinner and the lubricating strip is thicker. Although these changes are only fractional improvements, they help the shaver glide more smoothly across the skin.

The head also has a microcomb inserted in front of the blades. This small comb straightens facial hairs so that the shaver can cut them off cleanly. This little feature especially helps to trim off any curly hairs on the chin or the sides of the face.

Gillette also sells a fancier version of this razor, known as the ProGlide Power. The main difference between the two is that the Power uses a battery to add micropulses to a person’s shaving stroke. This allows a person to glide the blade even more cleanly across the face.

Despite what cynical shoppers may think, this is not a gimmick. The micropulses actually help to reduce the razor’s drag along the face. The shaver also has a handy low battery indicator light to notify people when they have to change the battery. It can also automatically shut off the power if the razor is left on accidentally.

If all this isn’t enough, men could try out the newest model, the ProGlide Styler. This product isn’t just a razor–it also includes trimming technology from Braun.M en can remove the shaver head of the device to use the styler head underneath. This combination allows this new razor to act as a shaver, a trimmer and an edger.

Although no one has thoroughly reviewed the ProGlide Styler, it could become the best model of the Gillette’s Fusion brand. Advertisements for the razor even include celebrities such as Adrien Brody, Andre 3000 and Gael Garcia Bernal. Gillette is clearly aiming to promote its razor as the best in the market.

Before shoppers buy a ProGlide, they should know that the replacement blade cartridges for the Fusion shavers are not cheap. The current list price for an eight-pack of cartridges is about $50. Amazon.com has a lower price at about $28, but this still is a really expensive razor to maintain.

If men are willing to pay the price though, the ProGlide may become one of the best shavers in their collection. The Fusion ProGlide has already received rave reviews from many publications. Based on the exquisite quality of this razor, the ProGlide is hard to beat.

Some people regret removing their hair and they try to grow it back using other shampoos and lotion. These people may want to reconsider their purchase.

The Food and Drug Administration forced a recall for specific brand of harmful regrowth products.

According to a press release on the Food and Drug Administration’s website, Perfect Image Solutions products could cause blood pressure to drop to dangerously low level. The unapproved lineup consists of regrowth topical lotions with high concentrations of chemicals such as minoxidil, azelaic acid, ketoconazale and salicylic acid.

Minoxidil is not a completely lethal chemical. In fact, oral minoxidil was originally used to treat patients with high blood pressure. When a person takes it in pill form, the minoxidil widens the small arteries in the body, causing the blood flow resistance to decrease.

Doctors actually stopped prescribing the drug for blood pressure when people discovered that hair regrowth is a side effect. In fact, it tended to cause hypertrichosis, a condition of excessive hair growth, among women. Now it is commonly used to treat male-pattern baldness. It also treats hair loss or hair thinning for women.

People are supposed to use minoxidil in small doses. Some of Perfect Image Solutions’ topical lotions contain 15 percent or 10 percent minoxidil. These highly concentrated dosage amounts could cause low blood pressure, heart palpitations and various other dangerous cardiac symptoms. In fact, the safest acceptable topical lotion strengths only consist of 2 percent and 5 percent minoxidil.

The azelaic acid in the medication is even more problematic. Technically, people are supposed to only use azelaic acid for a certain skin condition known as rosacea. According to medicinenet.com, rosacea is a common red acne-like condition skin condition that affects many people worldwide.

It really is not safe for people to use azelaic acid as a hair regrowth solution, even if regrowth is a side effect of applying the chemical. In fact, azelaic acid could cause burning, stinging or itching skin during the first few weeks.

Although the stinging subsides as the body adjusts to the medication, people shouldn’t have to suffer the painful effects of azelaic acid if they really do not need to suffer. The FDA report on Perfect Image Solutions states that the azelaic in the topical lotions could make the skin more sensitive to sunburns. Thus, Perfect Image Solutions really shouldn’t have added such a chemical to a hair regrowth topical lotion.

Technically, our website gives advice on hair removal rather than regrowth. However, the unapproved use of skin care chemicals is dangerous and harmful to people who use it. Thus, readers of this blog should be cautious about any hair removal products that may seem suspicious or unsafe to use.

Although the products recommended on our hair removal website have not been recalled as of yet, keep a close eye on any future FDA warnings. Stay cautious about the possible side effects of certain medications and be sure that the chemical makeup of the lotion is supposed to be used for hair depilation. Users of hair removal creams deserve to reassure themselves that these drugs are safe to use.

The Nair hair removal lotion may seem like a strange concoction, considering that one version uses baby oil as ingredients. It may not replace shavers, but Nair is a safe, dependable lotion alternative.

As further proof of Nair’s effectiveness, a science writer for Wired magazine decided to analyze each ingredient of the product. The lotion primarily uses potassium thioglycolate, a sulfur-hydrogen atom group that eats away at a skin and hair protein called keratin.

The liquid also contains calcium hydroxide to destroy the keratin proteins in the hair follicles at their weakest point. This substance attacks into the shaft, where the hair sprouts from the root. Manufacturers of earlier hair removal products previously used sodium hydroxide, until they received complaints that the chemical causes terrible burns on the skin. Thankfully, calcium hydroxide is a much safer alternative.

Many of the other components of Nair’s product include chemicals to repair the skin after the hair proteins are removed. Lanolin is a oily glandular substance that compensates for all the fats removed by the hydroxide. Cetearyl alcohol and aloe barbadensis also help to moisturize and soften the skin. The mineral oil, often known as baby oil, is the last of the moisturizers.

The skin-repairing chemicals outnumber the hair removal components. This shows that manufacturers need to take every step necessary to prevent burns in the dermis. Although this may reduce some of the capabilities of the product as a hair removal agent, it keeps people from suffering from major stinging pain.

Most users agree that Nair is an excellent hair removal agent. The lotion keeps the hair from growing for a quite a few days. Although Nair’s effects are not as smooth as a close shave, it is much more reliable than other competing brands.

For instance, Sally Hansen’s Spray-On Shower-Off hair remover hardly even removes hair on the legs. Veet’s Suprem’ Essence Hair Removal Gel Cream works reasonably well, but the final surface has a slightly hairy stubble on it. Nair is the most effective out of the three brands

With all that said, Nair is not for everyone. Even with a well thought-out chemical formula, Nair could still cause burns on some people’s skins. The manufacturer warns that users should patch test Nair on a small portion of skin. On the FAQ web page for this depilatory agent, Nair states that body chemistry can change. A harmful reaction could occur, even if someone has used the lotion before.

As a lotion, though, it is probably less painful than using wax to rip off the hair. The cream also does not require the precision of a tweezer or a threader, because all the depilating elements are in the chemicals of the ingredients. It also comes in a variety of fragrances and formulas for the bikini line or for the face.

Nair is a brand that people can rely on for hair removal at home. It certainly is not the best hair removal product that will permanently stop hair growth. However, it is a welcome alternative to waxes or other removal methods.

Manufacturers of women’s razors often have trouble differentiating their products from the myriad of competing razors. Schick found a unique way to level the competition by adding a shaving cream bar next to the blade on its new .

People may wonder how Schick’s product works. The Intuition is a four-blade razor that actually layers a skin conditioner around the blades. This means that women no longer need extra shaving cream to soften the skin before shaving. Now they only need water on the skin, so that the razor can build up lather onto the wet area.

The blade has its own share of critics who have either praised the new product or dismissed it as a waste of time and money. The razor seems to provide exceptional results for most women. However, some people noted that the blade does not provide the absolute closest shave. Women may have to run the razor over the skin four or five times before it removes the hair.

In spite of these tenuous problems, the Intuition quickly grew in popularity this year. Consumer Reports named the Intuition as one of the best products in 2011. Numerous women recommend it over the No! No! electric hair remover, because the Intuition does not produce the irritating odor of burnt skin.

Schick has already taken note of the Intuition’s popularity, by releasing various different packages of the Intuition. For starters, Schick provided the Intuition Plus, which uses different types of moisturizers to accompany the shaving cream bar. Another edition, the Intuition Natural, is hypoallergenic and fragrance free. The packaging of the Natural brand also consists of 55 percent post-consumer recycled material, guaranteeing that people will not hurt the environment by purchasing this product.

All of these variations are minor changes that don’t really change the overall performance. However, it adds some value to the Intuition as a durable razor that women can use repeatedly.

People can choose from a myriad of different refillable cartridges. Some cartridges use milk and honey as part of the shaving cream bar. Other packs use renewing moisturizers, which consist of pomegranate extract. This additive claims to have natural toning and anti-aging properties. In the long run though, most of these cartridges merely use fragrances to differentiate themselves from other razor cartridge brands.

Unfortunately, the brand also competes with another company, Gillette. Although Schick does a reasonable job at differentiating itself from other electric razors, Gillette’s Venus Spa Breeze can pull off nearly the same results. To make matters worse, neither the Spa Breeze or the Intuition has a reasonable price for the refillable cartridge. Each 12-cartridge packet costs about $30 whopping dollars.

As attractive as the product may look, most women will probably want to pass on both the Intuition and the Spa Breeze. It is a great razor, but it is only reasonable if women are willing to pay for all the expensive refills..

Gigi is the most recognizable manufacturer of wax warmers, but other companies also provide their own alternative devices. Sally Hansen recently started selling their wax warmer with results that are not nearly adequate.

In fact, many users of the Sally Hansen wax warmer kit were disappointed with either the electronic device or the wax itself.

Certainly Sally Hansen’s wax warmer comes packaged with everything that a person needs to wax the hair off his or her body. It includes the warmer, wax and three wooden spatulas to spread the wax. The wax is stripless, which means that it does not need cloth strips to rip the wax off the skin.

The entire kit is available for an inexpensive $20 price. It could have worked as an excellent value package for customers on a tight budget. Instead, the package suffers from a wide number of irritating flaws.

The warmer certainly works, but the design of it just reeks of shoddiness. Most people who operated it successfully said that they had to press the tin wax container all the way down inside. The wax is heated on the bottom, so first-time users must distribute the wax evenly around so that every part heats properly.

The cylinder-shaped heater is missing a crucial feature for the heat settings. Sally Hansen doesn’t use an adjustable temperature dial that allows people to control the heat level for waxing. Thus, users of the device could overheat the wax. This could cause the wax to burn terribly when it comes in contact with the skin.

Not every model of the device is designed in the same way either. Even when the heater works, many customers commented that the wax only starts to melt after 25 minutes. Other people stated that the warmer works perfectly fine. This means that not every Sally Hansen model is consistent. Certain heaters may work, while others may not even heat the wax at all. The device has not impressed many bloggers, who were fed up with such an inconsistent piece of electronics.

Another problem with Sally Hansen’s kit involves the wax itself. Unlike other brands, Sally Hansen’s wax is a stripless form. This means that users will not have to use a cloth strip to remove the wax. They simply rip the wax cleanly off with their hands.

The wax isn’t supposed to hurt. Unfortunately, many people already complained that the gooey mix is a pain to work with. One particular person who was using the product for a Brazilian wax procedure commented that the sticky wax does not rip off very easily. Others noted that the process left itchy red spots on their skin. The biggest issue with Sally Hansen is that her kit simply doesn’t provide dependable results for everyone.

Rather than bothering with Sally Hansen, people should do themselves a favor. They should purchase the standard Gigi Wax Warmer. It is a reliable heater that comes with a controllable thermostat to adjust the heat level. It comes with everything that a person really needs to wax his or her hair off from the comfort of home.

Shoppers who love natural products may want to look into purchasing Moom for their hair removal needs. Unlike other waxing products, Moom is completely made from natural ingredients.

Although the name doesn’t seem to mean anything, Moom is a dependable brand that definitely uses all-natural ingredients. The hair removal wax consists only of chamomile, lemon juice, tea tree oil, sugar and water. The simple formula is somewhat similar to sugaring, but people still need to use the waxing strips to remove the hair from their skin.

The entire do-it-yourself process is not hard to figure out, especially if someone is experienced in waxing. A person who has bought the product will first have to microwave the wax for about 10 seconds. After applying the Moom wax onto the portion of hair that they wish to remove, she or he should then adhere a reusable strip of fabric onto the hair.

Like most waxes, the removal process is somewhat painful. The person needs to rub on the strip three times firmly, before zipping the strip off quickly. The skin may sting after stripping the hair off, but the procedure becomes easier as the body adjust to the slight pain.

The reusable cloth strips work much more effectively than those in other wax products. People may have some slight difficulty figuring out how to use them. If a strip becomes too saturated with wax, remember to switch to a clean new one. The package of the wax also includes different sizes of strips, so be sure to switch to smaller strips for shorter hairs. These hairs tend to grow in areas such as the face, the knees and around the ankles.

The hair removes much more cleanly than other brands, though. People might need to use the wax more than once to remove some of the stray hairs, but it provides flawless, smooth skin. The surface doesn’t have the nasty burns from razors. In fact, Moom works better than many other epilators, which tend to grab at the skin.

The only problem with the hair removal kit is that the package does not include enough cloth strips for the entire body. Shoppers may have to purchase some extra strips if they want to wax off all the messy hairs on their skin. Thankfully, Moom also sells packets of 48 strips. Each packet sells for about $10.

One variation of the product includes lavender in the ingredient mix. According to the package, this is a special blend for extra-sensitive skin. Unfortunately, it suffers from many of the same problems as the original kit. It doesn’t provide enough strips. The wax can also overheat, depending on the heat level of the microwave.

Moom also has a special formula for men. It isn’t nearly as effective as the original wax for women, but it still removes the hair cleanly. Keep in mind that this line of wax also tends to redden the skin more often. Men also might have more time to get used to the procedure, especially if they haven’t waxed their skin before.

For most people, Moom is a great way to remove hair with all-natural materials. Although waxing is not for everyone, Moom is a reasonably safe alternative to using epilators or razor burns. Each kit only costs about $20.

These do-it-yourself products are surprisingly inexpensive when compared to the price of a waxing appointment at a salon. Both men and women may want to look into purchasing Moom, especially if they are hunting for alternatives to shavers and epilators.

Nads is one of the more popular hair removal companies when it comes to gels and creams. Their lineup often carries mixed reviews around the web, but their products for women are remarkably effective.

The company is renowned for its original hair removal gel, which is made from safe, natural ingredients. It isn’t toxic, so it definitely will not damage a person’s skin permanently. For some odd reason, the package even states that the gel is edible. Hopefully no one has the nerve to eat a gross depilatory gel.

Like most depilatory creams, the Nad’s original gel tends to sting after women apply it onto the skin. The pain only lasts for a short while, before the chemicals of the gel start to break down the protein structure of the hair. The only difference from other depilatory creams lies in the uprooting process. Women will have to uproot the hair in the same fashion as a waxing operation.

Some women have written complaints about the accompanying instructions, which claim that people can apply the gel at room temperature. As many reviewers noted, this is not true. People will have to heat the gel in the microwave, so that the gel melts to a thin enough coating for the skin.

After heating the gel, people apply the gel onto the skin. Women then use the cleansing wipes in the package to remove the hair by pulling it in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Some bloggers have had trouble with the cloths, claiming that they ran out of cloths before they even finished. Thankfully, they are actually reusable. People can simply use the same cloth to uproot hair in other larger areas, such as the legs.

Nads also supplies depilatory gels for men to use. Unfortunately, this product is not nearly as effective. Many men have complained that this gel is far more painful. Some have reported that their skin now has nasty blood dots where the hair used to be. Whether the problem has to do with the men’s inexperience with waxing, the Nads gel for men is not as effective as the gel for women.

Women who are looking to remove eyebrow hair may also look into trying out the Nads facial wand eyebrow shaper. Although the name makes it sound like an ordinary makeup tool, the wand is actually an applicator for the original all-natural Nads hair removal gel.

The instructions are somewhat complicated, but it works very similarly to a waxing gel. The user must first a thin coat of heated gel in the area in which she wants to remove the hair. She should then firmly press a cleansing strip to the eyebrow, before removing it in the opposite direction in which the hair is growing.

People should definitely try out Nads, to see if it is suitable for them. Each brand of gel works differently, but Nads is one of the more dependable brands in the market.

Readers of this blog may not have heard of machines that can perform intense pulsed light hair removal at home. These devices are actually quicker and much more efficient than expensive appointments with a hair removal specialist.

There are three popular brands of machines for intense pulsed light hair removal. Shoppers should try to find the Remington i-Light first, because it lasts the longest out of all the light pulse machines.

For anyone who hasn’t heard about intense pulsed light hair removal, also known as IPL hair removal, the process is similar to that of laser hair removal. The pulse device uses light energy to damage parts of the hair follicle, so that the hair is less likely to grow back. Most devices works best on light people with dark hair, because the light texture of the skin’s melanin is less likely to absorb heat from the pulse. Unlike lasers, the intense light pulse emits a pulse of light at specific wavelengths to further reduce any possible damage to the skin.

The Remington is one of the few unisex devices that will work for both men and women. It is also more suitable for people with light shades of skin. Keep in mind that even though the i-Light works with dark skin, it is more likely to cause damage to the skin because the dark pigment of the melanin tends to absorb more heat.

The Remington i-Light also will not remove hair permanently. This may disappoint people who are looking for a quicker and less painful way to keep the hair from growing. However, it still removes hair for about three to four weeks before the hair grows back again. This is a much longer duration than machines in other countries, such as the Boots Smooth Skin iPulse and the Phillips Lumea. The hair also looks thinner and less noticeable than it would if the person shaved it off.

The iLight is the least expense IPL light devices that is currently for sale in America, costing only $250. There are quite a few competing brands with intense pulsed light machines, but these devices have not been approved by the FDA thus far. The iLight’s light bulb is also more reasonably priced than bulbs for other machines. Currently, replacement bulbs cost only $25, which is much cheaper than the $40 to $50 bulbs for competing brands.

The only significant problem with the i-Light is that the bulb covers a smaller surface area than other IPL devices. So far, the device will only remove hair from an area of two square centimeters of skin. Thus, hair removal will take much longer for larger areas of skin, such as the legs or the chest. The bulb also will only last for about 1,500 pulse flashes. Also keep in mind that the machine tends to overheat very quickly.

In spite of these problems, the Remington i-Light is currently the best IPL machine that is specially designed for at-home use. Most of the other machines on the market look like unwieldy computer machines in a science lab. The i-Light, on the other hand, has a sleek, curved design and an attractive metallic finish. It is surprisingly inexpensive, making it very attractive for consumers who are looking for long-lasting hair removal on a fairly tight budget. This device is currently on sale at amazon.com, so shoppers may want to look into owning an i-Light.

Recently, manufacturers of beauty products started advertising hair removal pads that gently caress the skin. In various infomercials, they have claimed that these mittens can remove the hair painlessly, allowing legs to become silky smooth.

In a nutshell, pads provide pain-free hair removal, but don’t expect them to ever replace other essential shavers or epilators.

There are about two brands of pads that are currently the most popular. The most reputable one, the Smooth Away hair removal pad, contains what the company calls “superfine” crystals. These tiny crystals lightly rub off hair from the follicles.

Technically, it works in a manner similar to sandpaper. By rubbing the rough surface with very little pressure, the pads removes the hair from the legs and other areas where hair growth is relatively thin.

The Smooth Away mitten will not provide consistent results on the bikini line or the underarms. Women will have to take several passes to remove the hair from these areas. In fact, one reviewer reported that the shaving was more suitable for these areas, because of the extra effort required to rub these hairs off.

Despite the problems of these micro-crystal mitts, they make for somewhat effective tools. A stroke with a Smooth Away can exfoliate dull, flaky skin from the body. Women should try not to rub too vigorously. Putting too much pressure on the skin could cause it to redden quickly.

Still, most women are probably buying this product to remove the darker, coarse hairs from their legs. For most women, Smooth Away is a mediocre solution. Most customers criticized this product because it didn’t remove their hair. In fact, many people stated that the mitts only exfoliated the skin. They were only able to remove the hair after showering their legs.

The Smooth Away kit also comes with a mini mitt to remove facial hair. This tool can get rid of nasty peach fuzz hair very easily, but it probably cannot remove the thicker hairs that women want to remove. This is a very disconcerting product that raises women’s hopes, only to disappoint them when they actually try them out.

There are also other brands of mitts for customers to test, such as the Trademark Ultra Smooth hair removal and exfoliating system. Unfortunately, these mitts are also ineffective products. As often as women try to buff off the hairs with the pads, Trademark is just as unreliable as the Smooth Away.

Although this is ultimately a rip-off item, most mitt kits only cost about $5 each. Thus, women probably will not have to break the bank to purchase these simple mitts. Unfortunately, this product probably will not keep women happy unless someone finds a miraculous way to make the system produce more substantial results. If anything, the Smooth Away and the Trademark Ultra Smooth mitts are trendy novelty items that will go out of style in a few years or so.
